Inspection of Environmental Challenges in Chiatura

Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia – Levan Davitashvili and State Representative-Governor in Imereti – Shavlego Tabatadze inspected implementation of environmental obligations by Georgian Manganese, LLC is Chiatura. Environmental activities were also evaluated by the Chairman of   the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee of Parliament - Kakha Kuchava, majoritarian MP from Chiatura – Sulkhan Makhatadze and Mayor of Chiatura – Paata Nadiradze.

Additionally, governmental officials visited building site of the new factory, which will operate through the closed cycle process and production line will not reach river. Polluted water, the side product of ore enrichment works, was flowing directly into the river Kvirila for years.

They also inspected all the critical points, related to mineral resource industry and met with the local population to discuss the problems and solutions, associated with the open-cast mine processes. Georgian Manganese, LLC invests 20 million USD in building the new factory. Construction started last year and will be finished by the end of this year. The company is obliged to comply with the 14-point requirements, which includes recultivation of surrounding area.
