All enterprises will have an obligation to reduce and eliminate damage to the environment

✅   The Government of Georgia has approved a draft law on environmental liability in line with EU standards to reduce and prevent damage to the environment.

✅ All enterprises, and not just large companies, will have an obligation to reduce and eliminate significant damage to the environment.

✅ The new mechanism provides for compensation not only in cash, but also to reduce / eliminate the damage. The person who caused the damage to the environment is obliged to pay the costs and correct the consequences of the damage.

✅ The current legislation was entirely based on monetary liability for damage to the environment. The amount paid for the damage to the environment was directed to the state budget and it has no defined purpose to spend on measures to ensure the restoration of the damaged environment.

✅ Under the new law, the amounts paid as a result of monetary compensation will be transferred to a specially created account where the accumulated funds will be used to restore the damaged environment.

✅ High fines will be imposed on enterprises that pollute the air with harmful substances.

✅ The adoption of the law will establish a system of environmental responsibility close to European standards, which will be based on the principle of "polluter pays" and which aims to prevent and eliminate / reduce damage to the environment.
