Journalists got Acquainted with the Situation on Landfills
Shavlego Tabatadze, State Representative in Imereti, together with Giorgi Shukhoshvili, director of Solid Waste Management Company, showed journalists landfills in Samtredia and Kutaisi. The media representatives got acquainted with the situation in place.
"You are witnessing the situation in Samtredia and Kutaisi landfills and how the environment is being polluted for many years. The waste was burned and residents living in a nearby settlement are still unable to open windows because of the smell. You see, there is still a terrible situation in these areas.
You might agree that the European, modern standards of landfill arrangement is better than this one, which will be very environmentally safe, obey health standards and the existing discomfort for Samtredia and Kutaisi population seize to exist. According to the project, the regional landfill should be built according to the European standards and the facility will serve 700 000 citizens of Imereti, Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti "- Shavlego Tabatadze.
After getting acquainted with the condition of the landfills, presentation on the modern type landfills was held in the Administration of the State Representative in Imereti.
The project aims at the closure of the so called “Nikea landfill” in Kutaisi, collection of waste in municipalities, improving the cleaning system in the streets and arrangement of waste processing facilities.
The project is implemented with financial cooperation of Georgian-German sides. Along with the local contributors, donors include: German Reconstruction Credit Bank (KfW) and European Neighborhood Investment Fund EU-NIFF Grant. The total investment of the project is € 26 million.
